Walkers and rollators

Short answer

A walker is a frame that supports you as you walk; a rollator is a walker with wheels, hand brakes and usually a seat. Medicare Part B covers walkers, including rollators, when they're medically necessary.

Walkers and rollators

Federal device rules describe a mechanical walker as a four-legged device with a metal frame that gives moderate weight support while walking.[1]

Rollators add wheels, hand brakes and usually a seat for resting. Which kind suits someone, and at what height, is a question for their clinician or a supplier.

How Medicare handles walkers

Medicare Part B covers walkers, including rollators, as durable medical equipment when your provider prescribes one for use in your home.[2]

You can use any Medicare-approved supplier to repair a walker you own, including replacement parts.[2]

Depending on the item, Medicare may rent it, buy it, or let you choose.[3]

Why so many pharmacies list walkers

In Medicare's supplier data, most locations listed for walkers are retail pharmacies and grocery-store pharmacies.[4]

We list medical equipment suppliers first. Stores whose only mobility listing is walkers appear separately as other local retailers. Neither listing says which models a store keeps, or whether it has rollators.

Common questions

Is a rollator covered the same way as a walker?

Medicare's walkers page says Part B covers walkers, including rollators, when they're medically necessary and prescribed for use in your home.

Can a pharmacy fit me for a walker?

Some can. A pharmacy's Medicare listing for walkers doesn't say whether it carries rollators or adjusts them. Call ahead, or start with a medical equipment supplier.

Who can repair my walker?

Medicare says you can use any Medicare-approved supplier to repair a walker you own, including replacement parts.
